Summary
At Bonsai, I transitioned from an adverting background into UX design, contributing to various aspects of the product in a lean startup environment. My responsibilities included designing often-overlooked UI elements such as skeletons, zero states, loading states, and error pages to enhance user experience and reduce drop-off. Additionally, I worked on critical touchpoints like notifications, search, and onboarding processes, aiming to make complex interactions feel seamless and intuitive.
My role
I joined Bonsai as an experienced creative but new to UX. My role was to assist our design director in a lean start-up environment with all design needs from UX to social-media and presentations, and to learn as much as possible.
Overlooked states
One of my first roles at Bonsai was designing the skeletons, zero states, loading states, and error pages, which are often overlooked in the design process of a product. Arguably though, it is where some of the most important UI needs to happen, to avoid user drop-off.
Critical touchpoints
As part of my experience I was also tasked to work on critical user touchpoints such as notifications, search, and onboarding. Despite their complexities, they need to come across as effortless and intuitive to the user.
Conclusion
My experience with Bonsai V1 was instrumental in my growth as a UX designer. Working closely with the design director, I gained hands-on experience in creating user-centric designs that prioritize clarity and usability. This project underscored the importance of attention to detail in every aspect of the user journey, from initial loading screens to key interactive elements. It gave me all the knowledge I needed for the full redesign Bonsai would go through.
